Moms want to keep on fighting the flab, even on their special day - Mother’s Day, 14 May 2006. Yes, of course they’ll still love you if you give ‘em a big box of chocolates - but wouldn’t it be even more thoughtful to give your mom a mouthwateringly delicious treat - that just happens to be healthy? Here are five healthy ideas for Mother’s Day.

  • Get creative with fresh fruit Buy the most sumptuous, juicy, beautiful fruit you can find. It doesn’t have to be exotic, or expensive - although your mom won’t mind if it is! But a perfect pear is just as lovely to eat as a juicy mango. Then arrange your fruit so that’s it a treat for the eye as well as the palate. Have an eye for colour - oranges against dusky purple grapes, strawberries and raspberries contrasted with blueberries, dark red apples polished to an appetising shine, and arranged carefully with a cascade of green grapes. Pile whole fruits into a bowl or basket, to make an overflowing cornucopia of fruity delights, or slice and arrange carefully on a platter. On this special day, careful presentation makes all the difference.

  • Serve fresh juices Use your blender or juicer to create fresh smoothies or juice blends. Add a little chopped fresh fruit, a sprig of mint, some ice and offer a fruity cocktail.

  • Home-made cake What’s healthy about cake, you’re wondering Adapt your favorite recipes to make them healthier, by replacing half the fat content with apple sauce, easily made by simmering sliced, peeled cooking apples until tender, then pulping with a fork. Result - a moister, slightly fruity, healthier cake.

  • Make a sandwich For a Mother’s Day breakfast or lunch time treat, make a healthy BLT - use wholewheat bread, cut fat off bacon, grill until crisp and soak up excess fat with kitchen paper. Add lots of lettuce and tomato, plus a little low fat mayo.

  • Moms love chocolate But ‘chocolate’ doesn’t have to mean a huge box of everyday supermarket chocolates - almost all of which are crammed full of unhealthy fats, sugar, salt and additives. Instead, treat your mom to some dark, organic chocolate. It contains healthy minerals, tastes fantastic - and is best savored, one square at a time.

Make your mom happy this year with a healthy Mother’s Day treat - she’ll thank you for it!
